Fen — 4
Overview
While Rowan and Raff remain out at sea, Fen keeps a tense night watch from the beach, showing how uncertain and dangerous their situation has become. Alone in the boathouse, Fen tries on Claire's things and confronts her own dislocation: she does not belong on the mainland, but she cannot remain on Shearwater either.
Fen's inability to feel any trace of her mother deepens her isolation, and Dominic's sudden arrival on the beach signals that the family may be facing another crisis. The chapter heightens suspense around Rowan and Raff while pushing Fen's identity struggle into sharper focus.
Summary
Fen dives at night despite the cold and sits on the ocean floor in near darkness, counting the seconds she can stay below. While she watches the underwater world, an elephant seal drifts down in its sleep and settles on the seabed. Fen wants to remain there with it, but the limits of her lungs force her back to the surface.
After coming ashore, Fen sees the seals gathered on the beach and immediately resumes scanning the water for Rowan and Raff, who went out earlier that afternoon. Fen refuses to stop watching for the Zodiac, but the cold drives her back to the boathouse to warm up and change out of her wetsuit.
Inside the boathouse, Fen is drawn to the belongings she has stolen from Dominic: Claire's necklace, earrings, rings, and silk scarf. Fen puts them on and imagines adult femininity, but the experiment only sharpens her uncertainty. Fen thinks about the mainland and realizes she has no real place waiting for her there, yet also knows she cannot remain on the island; she feels caught between childhood and adulthood and painfully unlike her mother.
Fen looks around the shack for any sign of Claire's presence, hoping the objects might summon what Dominic seems able to see or feel, but nothing appears. That failure leaves Fen even more aware of her distance from her mother. Fen removes the jewelry, goes back outside, and huddles among the seals to stay warm while continuing her vigil.
Much later, Fen sees Dominic walking toward her along the beach. Because Dominic only comes down to her when something is seriously wrong, his approach immediately fills Fen with dread.
