Dominic — 6
Overview
Dominic brings Rowan back from the shore feeling both resentment and reluctant sympathy, while privately deciding he must eventually reveal the truth about her to the children. Hearing Fen, Raff, and Orly remember Claire makes Dominic feel both her absence and his growing distance from his children. When Dominic lashes out at Fen instead of comforting her, the chapter underscores Dominic's grief, guilt, and fear that he cannot hold the family together alone.
Summary
After returning with Rowan, Dominic is torn between hostility and concern. Dominic resents Rowan for arriving in the middle of a dangerous situation and for possibly being part of something that could threaten Dominic's children, but Dominic also sees that Rowan is freezing, shaken, and clearly overwhelmed. Dominic assumes Fen and Orly persuaded Rowan to join the failed attempt to reach the wreck and recover the radio, and Dominic tells Rowan only to go inside and warm up.
As Rowan leaves, Dominic thinks about the truths still hanging over the house. Dominic knows Dominic must tell the children who Rowan really is and warn them that Rowan has lied, but Dominic does not yet know how to do it. Dominic also wonders whether Rowan is thinking about Hank and about everything she failed to recover from the boat.
Walking back up the hill, Dominic hears Fen, Raff, and Orly talking about Claire. The children trade small, vivid memories of her habits and jokes, and Dominic is stopped by the realization that each child had a separate, specific bond with Claire. Their shared conversation reminds Dominic both of Claire's absence and of how much Dominic has lost touch with the easy closeness the four of them once had.
When the children see Dominic, the mood collapses. Dominic wants to comfort Fen after what she has seen and gather the family back into a protective warmth, but panic and frustration take over. Instead of expressing care, Dominic calls Fen stupid. Fen apologizes, Raff turns his anger toward Dominic, and Dominic immediately knows Dominic has failed her. As rain begins to fall, Dominic leads them home, overwhelmed by the burden of raising Fen through adolescence without Claire and frightened by the sense that the family is drifting beyond Dominic's control.
