Dominic reveals his fierce love for his youngest child, Orly, as he leaves the boy in bed because the storm is too dangerous for him. Dominic then follows Fen and Raff down to the beach, where Fen insists the washed-up woman was still breathing. Dominic has little hope, but the woman’s survival in such violent seas convinces him she is unusually strong.

Dominic and Raff lift the injured woman and struggle back up the long path to the house while Fen leads them through the storm. Dominic notices that the woman has severe wounds along her left side and dangerously slow breathing and heartbeat. Because Dominic has seen what the sea usually does to bodies, the woman’s continued fight for life feels almost unnatural.

Once home, Dominic and the children strip off the woman’s wet clothes to combat hypothermia, leaving only her underwear. Fen silently takes off her own clothes and climbs into bed with the stranger to warm her with direct body heat, and Dominic, Raff, and Orly cover them with blankets and wait for the woman’s temperature to rise. Dominic watches his daughter’s quiet resolve and wonders what she is thinking as she uses her own body to save a stranger.

When the woman is finally warm enough, Fen gets dressed and the family begins treating the injuries. Dominic removes bits of cloth from the wounds, notices the woman’s strong build and shaved head, and clumsily stitches the worst cuts before disinfecting and bandaging the rest. The woman then develops a fever and makes frightening sounds, but when Dominic tries to send Orly away, he realizes the family is more comforted by staying together.

As the storm batters the house through the night, the family keeps vigil beside the woman while she convulses and struggles. Orly is frightened by the shaking windows, but the house holds. Watching the stranger fight for life, Dominic feels that even if she survives this night, the sea has not truly released its claim on her.
