While Dominic is away with Rowan in the south, Fen goes to the lighthouse to help her brothers with chores. From the laundry window, Fen sees Dominic and Rowan returning together and stops to watch them. When Dominic gently takes Rowan's face and speaks to her with visible softness, Fen is shocked by the intensity of her own reaction and realizes she feels relief.

Fen spends the afternoon watching for more signs of closeness, but Dominic and Rowan do not repeat the moment. Then Fen follows Dominic upstairs and hears him talking again to his dead wife. That discovery kills Fen's hope that things have already changed, and she decides she must act if Dominic and Rowan are to have any real future.

Waiting until Dominic is in the shower, Fen quickly fills a bag with the last of her mother's belongings, including books, trinkets, jewelry, and clothes. As she heads out, Raff catches her. Fen insists she knows what she is doing, but Raff warns that whatever she plans will only make things worse.

On the beach, Fen builds up a fire with driftwood and dried kelp and lays out the items she has collected from her boathouse. She hesitates because the objects hold precious memories of her mother, and she wonders whether destroying them will also erase those memories. Even so, Fen decides Dominic must be released from the hold of his ghost, and she begins feeding her mother's belongings into the fire one by one.
