Dominic spends the chapter waiting for Rowan after she disappears without explanation. Because Raff told Dominic that Rowan used chemicals at the southern hut and likely proved that blood had been spilled there, Dominic assumes Rowan now suspects violence and believes he is lying to her. Rowan's silence unsettles him more than open accusation, and his fear is sharpened by his growing attachment to her.

When Rowan finally returns, Dominic expects a confrontation. Instead, Rowan quietly gathers more supplies, straps a shovel to her back, and leaves again. The shovel makes Dominic panic, because he immediately understands that Rowan may be heading for a burial site and may uncover something he has tried to keep hidden.

Dominic follows Rowan at a distance and briefly loses her, which makes him fear she has gone farther south. He eventually finds Rowan on the hillside overlooking the sea, at the grave marked only by a crude headstone. Rowan has already opened the mound. Dominic tries to stop her, but he sees that Rowan is utterly determined to keep digging, so he takes the shovel and digs for her, remembering that he made this grave himself with his son.

When Dominic and Rowan finally reach the body, they climb into the hole and uncover a man wrapped only in a sheet. Dominic warns Rowan that the remains will be disturbing after several weeks underground. Rowan pulls back the covering, recognizes that the dead man is not Hank, breaks down in tears, and tenderly touches his face before asking Dominic, "Who is he?" The grave Rowan thought would explain Hank's disappearance instead opens a new and deeper mystery.
