Chapter 19
Overview
Oraya fights through the collapsing second trial, kills Kiretta, and uncovers a horrifying truth: humans, including children, have been planted in the maze as expendable pieces of the spectacle. Refusing Vincent’s ruthless lessons, she risks her own survival to save an injured girl, forcing Raihn to fight beside her and deepening their bond through shared danger. By the time they escape, Oraya is gravely wounded, Vincent’s reaction reveals how much he loves her, and Raihn’s vow to protect the child marks a major shift in Oraya’s trust in him.
Summary
Oraya dives through a doorway as the maze collapses and realizes the halls are not just falling apart but shifting like the ever-changing underworld of Alarus. At the next door she meets Kiretta, and the two attack immediately. Kiretta tries to overpower Oraya with Shadowborn mind magic, but Oraya senses Kiretta’s weakness, feigns submission, then stabs her in the throat with a poisoned dagger and forces her onto the slab to open the way forward.
Beyond the door, Oraya enters fields of poppies and silver arches that represent the threshold of the underworld. As she follows signs of battle, she finds not only dead contestants but dead humans in white robes, then realizes living humans have been placed throughout the trial as scenery, bait, or sport. When she finds a crying little girl trapped beside a corpse, Oraya knows rescuing her will make survival harder, yet she cannot leave her behind and pulls the child free despite the danger.
Carrying the injured girl slows Oraya and makes her vulnerable. A Bloodborn contestant nearly kills her, but Raihn arrives in time, wounds the man, and creates an opening for Oraya to drive her blade into his heart. The two push deeper into the maze together, with Raihn handling much of the fighting while Oraya protects the child. Their mutual suspicion persists, shown when Oraya mistakenly slashes Raihn because she thinks he is moving to sacrifice the girl at the final gate.
Before they can finish the trial, Angelika ambushes Oraya and uses blood magic through Oraya’s wounds to overwhelm her. Oraya chooses not to wait for Raihn because the child may not survive the attack, and that hesitation nearly gets her killed. Even after Angelika stabs and strangles her, Oraya tears the dagger from her own side and stabs Angelika back, holding on until Raihn returns and pulls Angelika off her.
Half-conscious and badly wounded, Oraya refuses Raihn’s help until she can gather the girl in her arms and cross the threshold herself. In the colosseum she sees Vincent staring at her with open horror, and the sight makes Oraya understand the depth of Vincent’s love for her. Surrounded by predators and soldiers, Oraya begs Raihn not to let them take the child, and Raihn answers with a solemn promise that he will not.
