Raihn leads Oraya across the human district to show her what happened to the injured girl from the trial. They move carefully through the shadows and climb onto a roof overlooking a lit building. From there, Oraya sees the girl alive inside a home for children without families. The sight gives Oraya intense relief, but the relief is mixed with grief because the girl is still trapped in a brutal world of poverty and predation.

While they watch, Oraya questions Raihn about why he followed her into the district. Raihn admits he was curious and concerned, and he says he is surprised to find Oraya hunting vampires who prey on humans. Oraya cannot understand why a vampire would care, and Raihn finally reveals that he is Turned and used to be human. That revelation reframes his sympathy for the district and explains parts of his personality that had not made sense to Oraya before.

Raihn asks how long Oraya has been secretly doing this work, and Oraya lies to minimize how long it has been going on. She confirms that Vincent does not know, because her actions would create political problems and likely bring punishment. Standing together above the district, Raihn plainly tells Oraya that what she did in the arena and what she does here are admirable. He also apologizes for how he behaved before the trial, saying his anger came from unrelated problems rather than Oraya herself.

Oraya does not apologize in return, but the exchange still softens the tension between them. Oraya notices Raihn in a new way and feels an unwanted surge of attraction, even while reminding herself that understanding him will also help her kill him later if necessary. Raihn then proposes that they stop training in private and instead train together in the district while protecting humans, because watching Oraya fight there has taught him more about her style than practice sessions have.

Oraya resists because the district feels like her secret space, but she realizes she needs Raihn if she wants to survive the Halfmoon trial and reduce the damage being done while she is away. Looking again at the sleeping girl, Oraya sees that help could save more lives. When Raihn asks for one honest answer about whether they are really going to work together, Oraya agrees. It is not full trust, but it is a real step toward partnership.
