Chapter 49
Overview
Oraya wins the Kejari, but the triumph is instantly hollow because she has killed Raihn and is devastated by the cost of survival. Her grief reframes the entire contest, showing that the power she sought has come with a personal loss she cannot justify. The chapter then pivots from private heartbreak to divine consequence as Nyaxia’s arrival signals that Oraya’s victory will now bring her face-to-face with the goddess herself.
Summary
Oraya’s Nightfire vanishes as she looks at Raihn’s body and struggles to accept what has happened. Seeing his half-open eyes and lingering smile, Oraya tries to convince herself that she did not truly drive the blade in, because the reality that she killed him is unbearable.
The Ministaer announces that the twenty-first Kejari has a victor, and the crowd erupts in celebration. Oraya does not respond to the cheers. Instead, she forces her hand to release her weapon, touches Raihn’s still-warm face, calls his name, and waits for an answer that never comes, which confirms that her victory cost Raihn’s life.
That realization breaks Oraya emotionally. She remembers past losses, including Ilana’s death and an old vow to Vincent that she would never cry again, but this time she cannot hold back her grief. Oraya concludes that although she has achieved everything she once wanted, the world has lost someone extraordinary, and her own survival does not feel like a worthy exchange.
As the Ministaer orders the victor to rise and greet the goddess, Oraya remains consumed by Raihn’s death until a sudden silence falls over the arena. When she looks up, the stars brighten, silver wisps swirl across the sky, and the air becomes unnaturally still. Oraya understands that Nyaxia, the Mother of vampires, is arriving, and the Ministaer commands everyone to bow before her.
