Chapter 5
Overview
Oraya wakes in the Moon Palace at the start of the Kejari, disoriented, bleeding, and surrounded by the sounds of humans being hunted by frenzied vampires. When she realizes Ilana is among the victims, she abandons caution and tries to save her, only to learn that the palace's shifting magic keeps Ilana beyond her reach until she is killed. Unable to stop the loss, Oraya escapes into a greenhouse and turns to a harsher strategy: survive until sunrise, when the sun may finally give her an advantage.
Summary
At the beginning of the Kejari, Oraya forces herself to stay calm as she wakes disoriented in total darkness inside the Moon Palace. Guided by Vincent's training, she takes stock of her surroundings, realizes she is in the ancient tournament palace, and decides she must move upward toward light and windows, where dawn will eventually weaken or kill vampires. She cannot produce useful magic, gropes for her weapons, and accidentally slices her hand, creating a dangerous blood scent before recovering both blades and feeling her way to a staircase.
As Oraya climbs, she hears distant screams, snarls, and feeding, and realizes that humans have been placed inside the palace as prey or distraction. The vampires sound more feral than usual, likely affected by Nyaxia's magic. Vincent's warnings about the Moon Palace's shifting halls prove true when the screams that had been fading away begin to come closer again, and Oraya discovers that the staircase has trapped her in the palace's disorienting loops.
Then Oraya recognizes one of the voices in the chaos: Ilana. The sound shatters Oraya's discipline, and she runs toward Ilana despite knowing the attempt is reckless. An unidentified male vampire grabs her and whispers that the humans are dead and that chasing them will get Oraya killed too. Unable to overpower him, Oraya stabs him in the thigh and keeps running, but the palace seems to keep Ilana forever just out of reach. Oraya finally understands that the proximity is an illusion, and she is forced to listen as Ilana's screams weaken and disappear beneath the sounds of feeding vampires.
After stopping in grief and rage, Oraya senses another vampire behind her and attacks immediately when a woman speaks to her. She flees again instead of fighting, and the struggle behind her buys her time. At last she reaches a humid, moonlit greenhouse inside the palace, where she can see enough to orient herself and notices the first hint of dawn on the horizon. Realizing the glass structure will become the safest place in the palace once the sun rises, Oraya hides among the plants, grips her weapons, and waits for daybreak.
