Chapter 42
Overview
In the aftermath of Salinae’s destruction, Raihn heals Oraya’s wound, but grief quickly turns into a fierce confrontation over Vincent’s crimes. When Oraya reveals that she planned to become Vincent’s Coriatae, Raihn argues that Vincent has been exploiting her rather than protecting her. Unable to fully defend her father or accept Raihn’s accusation, Oraya breaks away and goes to Vincent’s castle to demand answers herself.
Summary
After leaving the arena, Oraya insists on walking back to the apartment despite her injury. As she and Raihn move through the Moon Palace, Angelika, the last remaining contestant, stumbles back alone and screams, confirming that Ivan is gone and deepening the sense of catastrophe. In the apartment, Raihn carries Oraya to bed and uses medicine to heal the wound in her abdomen while both of them silently reel from the destruction of Salinae.
As Raihn tends her, Oraya cannot stop thinking about the humans and Rishan who died in Salinae, including the possibility that children she once knew were among the dead. Raihn admits that Mische could easily have been there and then calls Vincent a monster. Oraya reflexively defends Vincent, saying there must have been a reason, but Raihn rejects any justification for half a million deaths and insists that seeing the ruins is enough to condemn him.
The argument sharpens when Oraya accidentally reveals that she intended to ask Nyaxia for a Coriatis bond and become Vincent’s Coriatae. Oraya explains that she wanted Vincent’s power so she could return to Salinae and help the humans there. Raihn responds with contempt and anger, arguing that Vincent had already been draining Salinae of people and resources for years and that the bond would not simply empower Oraya; it would also bind her so she could never act against Vincent.
Raihn presses further, saying Vincent sent Oraya into the Kejari under the false promise that she could be a hero while actually using her for his own ends. Oraya draws her weapons and insists that Vincent loved her and gave her everything, but Raihn stays focused on the truth he sees: Vincent killed countless people because they were tools or obstacles, and Oraya needs to ask why Vincent fears her and what he gains from controlling her. Shaken by Raihn’s grief and by the possibility that he is right, Oraya refuses his comfort, leaves the Moon Palace, ignores Vincent’s chosen meeting place, and walks straight to Vincent’s castle to confront him on her own terms.
