Chapter 38
Contains spoilersOverview
In the aftermath of the shootout, Tim Jamieson, Wendy Gullickson, and Luke Ellis secure Dr. James Evans and confront the wounded Julia Sigsby. Luke demands a way to contact the Institute’s acting leader, Stackhouse, and Evans reveals Sigsby’s special phone. Despite Doc Roper’s objections, Tim decides to take Sigsby and Evans for a short, off-site interrogation to try to save Luke’s captive friends at the Institute.
Summary
As DuPray’s townspeople gathered and covered the dead, Tim Jamieson, Wendy Gullickson, and Luke Ellis found Dr. James Evans sitting on the curb with a badly injured foot. Evans demanded a lawyer and a doctor, but Luke identified him and accused him of complicity. When Evans blamed Luke, Luke lunged, and Tim restrained him.
Tim warned Evans of the severity of the crimes—five slain law officers—and Wendy threatened to shoot Evans’s other foot if he did not cooperate. Under pressure, Evans admitted Julia Sigsby had a special phone used to contact Stackhouse and said he saw her put it in her coat pocket before the attempted extraction. Wendy went to retrieve it and, at Luke’s insistence, to bring Sigsby as well.
Wendy returned with the boxy phone and with Orphan Annie and Drummer Denton helping the bleeding but resisting Sigsby across the street, trailed by townspeople and Doc Roper. With sirens approaching, Luke pleaded for immediate action to save his trapped friends and the heavily sedated children (“gorks”) at the Institute. Sigsby demanded a hospital and a lawyer; Annie and others shut her down.
Tim weighed the decision and ordered Doc Roper to bandage Sigsby for transport, withholding pain medication. Roper initially objected but, after surveying the bodies and damage, agreed to assess her injury. Annie restrained Sigsby while Roper cut open her pant leg, revealing a minor but painful bullet wound that was already clotting. He cleaned and bandaged it.
Tim checked the phone, confirmed power, and handed it to Luke for safekeeping with the flash drive. Evans warned that Luke must be careful or risk being responsible “for the end of the world,” prompting Sigsby to tell Evans to be quiet. Tim told Doc Roper to inform the incoming state police that they would return within one to two hours, though he doubted they could follow normal procedure after this. He reflected that his time in DuPray was likely over and briefly contemplated a future with Wendy.
