Chapter 33
Overview
Gold team opened fire on the DuPray sheriff’s station with submachine guns, shattering the facade. As Julia Sigsby ordered a direct assault to seize or kill Luke Ellis, local residents Corbett “Drummer” Denton and Orphan Annie ambushed the team from the Gem Theater and forced the lead gunmen to disarm. A tense standoff formed as a gunshot from inside the station distracted everyone and Robin Lecks drew her weapon, triggering the team’s trained response.
Summary
Louis Grant and Tom Jones unleashed automatic fire from HK37s at the DuPray sheriff’s station, blowing out windows and doors while the rest of Gold team spread out in the street. Dr. Evans stood aside with his hands over his ears. Winona Briggs cheered the attack, and Julia Sigsby pushed the team to storm the building and either capture or kill Luke Ellis.
Before they could advance, Orphan Annie called out from behind them, warning that any forward move would be deadly. She ordered Grant and Jones to drop their weapons. After a brief exchange, both men complied and set the guns on the pavement.
The attackers saw two locals under the Gem Theater’s marquee: Corbett “Drummer” Denton with a rifle and Orphan Annie holding both an automatic and a revolver. Drummer demanded that the rest of Gold team disarm, confronting them at gunpoint. Julia Sigsby, exhausted and exasperated by the mounting obstacles, faced the standoff.
Gunshots sounded from inside the sheriff’s station—one, then another—drawing the ambushers’ attention. Grant and Jones tried to snatch up their dropped HKs, but Annie shouted them down.
Seizing the distraction, Robin Lecks drew her Sig Micro pistol. In accordance with training, the other Gold team members dropped to clear the line of fire for Grant and Jones. Julia Sigsby stood her ground amid the chaos as the confrontation tipped toward renewed violence.
