Children arrive with either telepathy (TP) or telekinesis (TK), sometimes developing both—labeled “pinks”—after further enhancement. She explains that while individual power is limited, children’s abilities combine and grow exponentially when they are together, especially after a visual trigger tied to the Stasi Lights.

Maureen says the children are used to kill specific targets, staging incidents as accidents, suicides, or murders. She cites examples—including politician Mark Berkowitz and bomb-maker Jangi Gafoor—to illustrate the scope of the program, echoing Mrs. Sigsby’s metaphor that staff are “bailing out a boat” to keep the world from sinking. She details the human cost: Back Half “uses up” children, whose headaches worsen and whose identities erode with each exposure to the Stasi Lights and Dr. Hendricks’s sparkler, culminating in transfer to Ward A, known as “Gorky Park,” where many die of induced pneumonia or simply stop breathing. She adds that staff work “long swings” due to the toxic environment; two doctors stationed there most of the time are losing their minds.

Overwhelmed, Maureen admits she chose Luke’s escape over the Institute’s mission, fearing she may have doomed the world, and asks forgiveness. Her recorded message then cuts to covert footage filmed through a slit in her uniform pocket as she walks a blue-carpeted Back Half corridor.

The hidden video passes a screening room where Iris Stanhope, a friend of Luke, appears smoking, and other children drift by with dulled affect. A red-smocked caretaker greets Maureen, visible with a zap-stick (a Taser with adjustable voltage). The camera continues to a door marked “WARD A,” which Maureen calls “Gorky Park.” She uses an orange key card to unlock it as she says, “This is Gorky Park,” and opens the door, revealing “hell” beyond as the clip ends.
