Chapter 25
Contains spoilersOverview
At the DuPray sheriff’s office, Tim Jamieson, Wendy, Sheriff John, Frank Potter, and Luke Ellis finish watching Maureen Alverson’s covert video of Ward A, revealing horrific conditions for the Back Half children. The footage devastates the viewers and triggers Luke’s acute distress. Tim and Wendy take Luke outside to recover, where Luke senses his friends at the Institute are combining their powers to free the Ward A kids. As Luke steadies himself, he briefly wonders if he caused the streetlights to turn on, then notices a couple crossing Main Street.
Summary
The video from Maureen Alverson shows Ward A, the deepest area of the Institute’s Back Half, as a large, industrial-looking room lit by caged fluorescents and lined with wire-meshed windows. Bare mattresses are scattered, some overturned and stained. A gutter along one wall, beneath the slogan "YOU ARE SAVIORS!", serves as a latrine; a naked girl in dirty socks defecates there as the camera briefly shifts. The atmosphere is a chaotic din of voices, cries, and confused motion.
A housekeeper in a brown uniform uses a Rinsenvac to clean filth on the floor, and she acknowledges Maureen with a wave, her words drowned by the machine and the noise. Children move aimlessly or engage in disordered behavior: a girl does cartwheels, a boy in dirty underpants chants "ya-ya-ya" while hitting his head, and other children lie on mattresses staring upward through the mesh shadows. Luke identifies the boy with pimples and glasses as Pete Littlejohn, confirming that previously mentioned Back Half residents have deteriorated into the ward’s squalor.
Across from the gutter, a long feeding trough holds a brown substance that two girls scoop with their hands while a boy eats face-first, fingers snapping. After a moment, the surreptitious footage ends, returning to a blue screen with no further commentary from Maureen. Frank Potter asks what they saw, and Luke—visibly shaken—confirms it was the back half of Back Half, Ward A, which he calls “Gorky Park.”
Overcome, Luke staggers and asks to go outside, describing a sensation of the walls closing in. Tim Jamieson supports him, and Sheriff John authorizes Tim and Wendy to escort Luke into the alley through the emergency exit. Outside, Wendy cautions them not to disturb local homeless resident Orphan Annie Ledoux’s belongings stored there.
As Luke breathes and steadies himself, he says his friends at the Institute are going to let the Ward A children out. He names Avery Dixon, Kalisha Benson, Nicky, and George, and says he can somehow sense their combined strength even without seeing them, attributing the connection to Avery’s power.
At the alley’s mouth, the six streetlights on Main Street switch on. Luke briefly asks if he caused it, but Wendy gently explains it is on a timer. She urges him back inside for a drink, but Luke hesitates and watches a hand-holding couple—a blond man and a woman in a floral dress—cross the otherwise empty street.
