Chapter 2
Contains spoilersOverview
Left alone with Luke in the storage office, Orphan Annie tended his injuries and gently drew out personal details. Luke revealed his parents were murdered and he was kidnapped and experimented on, while Annie connected his story to conspiracy themes she follows on late-night radio. Their exchange established trust and suggested Annie believes in ongoing love after death and in secret organizations using black cars and conducting experiments.
Summary
After Tim Jamieson and the others left, Orphan Annie Ledoux found clean rags, wet them, and gave Luke the tighter one to press to his injured ear while she wiped blood from his face. Her gentle care reminded Luke of his mother, which made him cry.
Annie paused to ask why Luke was crying. Luke said he missed his mother. When Annie said his mother likely missed him too, Luke, speaking analytically, replied that he doubted consciousness continued after death, though he wished it did. Annie disagreed, asserting that souls continue and pay attention to the living.
Luke asked if love continues after death; Annie affirmed that love survives the body and asked how long Luke’s mother had been gone. Luke said about a month to six weeks, adding that his parents were murdered and he was kidnapped. He acknowledged this might be hard to believe.
Annie said it was not hard to believe if one was “in the know,” tapping her temple. She asked if the abductors came in black cars and whether experiments were performed on Luke. Luke, startled, asked how she knew. Annie credited late-night radio host George Allman on WMDK, whose show The Outsiders discusses walk-ins, UFOs, psychic powers, black cars, and secret experiments.
Luke confirmed interest when Annie mentioned psychic powers. Annie explained that Allman avoids naming specific perpetrators (aliens, government, or both) to avoid being silenced, but frequently references black cars and horrific experiments. She added fringe examples, such as claiming Son of Sam was a “walk-in,” and then directed Luke to raise his head so she could finish cleaning the blood before it dried.
