Chapter 16: Dusty
Contains spoilersOverview
Dusty watched lights in Anne Wilson’s main house and decided to break the ice with Cam on her move-in night. He brought housewarming cutting boards from his mother, helped assemble Riley’s bed, and shared an honest, careful conversation that touched on their past, Cam’s job and family, and Dusty’s life at Rebel Blue. The evening ended with Dusty asking if they could be friends, and Cam agreed.
Summary
From his tenant house on Anne Wilson’s property, Dusty saw lights in the main house and realized Cam had moved in. Nervous but determined, he took a stack of wooden cutting boards his mother Aggie had gifted as a housewarming present and went to Cam’s door. Cam, dressed casually and without an engagement ring, invited him inside despite initial awkwardness. She explained Riley was with Gus for the night so Cam could set up the house for Riley’s arrival.
In the kitchen, Cam admired the cutting boards and revealed Aggie had been with her when she learned she was pregnant. Dusty offered to help with Riley’s bed, and Cam supplied tools and drinks, including a Capri Sun. In Riley’s room, with early-2000s emo music playing that evoked their shared past, Dusty began assembling the four-poster bed while Cam unpacked clothes. They slipped into gentle small talk: Cam works as a junior associate in real estate and estates law in Jackson Hole; she appreciates the rule of law but often finds the job boring and chose stability for Riley’s sake.
They traded favorites and memories—Cam still loves tomatoes and Bloody Marys; Dusty still favors blue raspberry and dislikes pickles. Cam admitted she kept tabs on Dusty via social media; Dusty had done the same and recalled the pain of seeing a photo of Cam, infant Riley, and Gus years ago. Cam asked about Dusty’s sister Greer (now in Alaska with the Forest Service), and Dusty described returning to Meadowlark, choosing Anne’s tenant cabin over staff housing to build a more permanent home, and how Anne offered him the cabin after he helped her at the grocery store.
Cam mentioned her boxed mattress had not yet arrived, so she would use a couch; Dusty expressed concern but moved on. She described the ease of staying with Gus and Teddy and how Teddy’s presence has been good for Riley, countering Cam’s mother Lillian’s insinuations about maternal “competition.” Cam said integrating Teddy into the co-parenting dynamic had been unexpectedly smooth. When Dusty asked about Cam’s ex-fiancé, Graham, she said “that was different” and “not what Gus and Teddy are,” then steered the topic back to the bed.
They finished assembling and making Riley’s bed, noting Riley’s love of flowers and confirming summer remains Cam’s favorite season. A nostalgic song prompted Dusty to wordlessly ask Cam to dance; sensing her withdrawal, he apologized and clarified he had come to check on her and hoped they could be friends. After visibly weighing the decision, Cam agreed: “Friends it is.”
