Chapter 11: Cam
Contains spoilersOverview
Camille Ashwood tours the Wilson house with Emmy while Riley spends the day with Gus. Real estate agent Ed Wyatt shows them the home and outlines lease terms from owner Anne, which are favorable but contingent on Anne’s continued life. Cam feels the house suits her and Riley and is ready to proceed despite caveats. At the end, Ed reveals the property’s on-site groundskeeper tenant is Dusty Tucker.
Summary
With Riley on a snowy trail ride with Gus and plans to dine with Gus’s father, Camille “Cam” Ashwood takes the afternoon to view the Wilson house, accompanied by Emmy. Cam reflects on Riley’s adaptability and their simple explanation for Graham’s absence: sometimes things do not work out. They drive to the secluded, snow-dusted craftsman home, which sits between Rebel Blue and town and backs onto trailheads Cam thinks Riley would love.
Emmy parks beside a Mercedes SUV, then she and Cam meet Ed Wyatt at the door. Ed recognizes Cam and shares that Anne, the owner, remembered Cam from high school and instructed him not to show the house to others unless Cam declined. Buoyed by that welcome, Cam and Emmy follow Ed through the rooms.
Ed describes the home’s history—built in 1929, bought by Anne and Arnold in the 1950s, and long loved by family and neighbors. He shows the formal living room with bay windows, the formal dining room now used as a library, and explains that common areas can remain furnished while bedrooms will be empty. This suits Cam, who has Riley’s furniture but not her own after leaving Graham’s house.
They tour the open kitchen and living room, noting the brick, wood-mantled wood-burning fireplace and updated stainless-steel appliances, including a gas stove and dishwasher. Ed confirms the layout: a primary bedroom with en suite, two additional bedrooms with a shared bath, and an unfinished basement with laundry. Cam feels the space is warm and inviting and can envision living there with Riley, close to family.
Discussing terms, Ed proposes a twelve-month lease that can renew only if Anne is still alive; if Anne dies during the lease, Cam may finish the term, but renewal would be at the new owner’s discretion. Cam accepts these conditions as sufficient time to reset her life. Ed adds that structural changes are prohibited, renter-friendly updates are allowed, and the fireplace may only be used under the supervision of the groundskeeper.
When Cam asks about the groundskeeper, Ed explains there is a small studio house on the property with a tenant who handles snow removal, yard work, and maintenance in exchange for rent. He reveals the tenant’s identity as Dusty Tucker, surprising Cam and immediately linking the house to her complicated history with Dusty.
