Chapter 31: Cam
Contains spoilersOverview
Fourteen years earlier, Cameron struggled with loneliness and regret after moving to Montana with Dusty for his seasonal guiding job. Their unmet expectations erupted into a late-night argument about plans, sacrifice, and happiness. When Dusty refused to return to Meadowlark, Cam concluded she was done and left the next morning, catching a bus to Jackson Hole and effectively ending their cohabitation.
Summary
In a flashback, Cameron read a note from Dusty saying he would be home late and that he loved and missed her. They were living in a small one-bedroom apartment in Montana after leaving Meadowlark in July, with Dusty working as a wilderness guide through the fall and talking about future seasonal moves. Cam felt adrift, working bored shifts at a western wear store and missing a sense of purpose and goals.
Cam admitted she loved Dusty but felt their life was wrong for her, and she was ashamed of lashing out at him over small things. Her parents had cut off her phone and frozen her bank account after she left, reinforcing her isolation. Overwhelmed, she cried in the shower, then lay awake until Dusty returned late and held her.
When Dusty asked what was wrong, Cam asked if he was happy, then confessed she was not. She said she wanted to go home to Meadowlark to pursue classes and some stability. Dusty offered to take her back and try long-distance, but Cam meant for both of them to return together.
Dusty said he did not want to go home because exploring had been his lifelong plan and he had a job. Cam countered that she had given up college for their relationship and regretted it. The argument escalated as Dusty insisted he had warned her beforehand about not abandoning school and being cautious, while Cam accused him of choosing the lifestyle over her.
Dusty said he wanted her there only if she wanted to be there and could not be responsible for both of them. Cam, hurt, declared she was done. Dusty asked to postpone the conversation until morning, then slept on the couch while Cam cried herself to sleep.
The next morning, after Dusty left for work, Cam packed a bag and departed. She left a note saying she found a bus to Jackson Hole and wished him luck with his plans, ending their shared life in Montana.
