Chapter 39: Dusty
Contains spoilersOverview
Dusty returned home after Riley’s soccer game, had a candid talk with Teddy Andersen about fitting into Cam and Riley’s life, and affirmed his love for both. Drawn to Cam’s house that night, Dusty and Cam confirmed their relationship felt permanent and shared an intimate, consensual encounter, after which Cam asked him to stay the night so they could wake up together.
Summary
Dusty arrived home late and paused in his truck, savoring the quiet and reflecting on the morning’s soccer game and how openly Cam had acknowledged their relationship. His stillness was interrupted by Teddy Andersen, who hopped into his truck to talk. Teddy said she and Gus were retrieving Riley’s forgotten blanket for a team sleepover and used the chance to debrief about Dusty and Cam, praising Dusty for showing up for Riley and noting that being the other half of a parent is meaningful and demanding.
Dusty admitted he loved both Cam and Riley and worried about overstepping. Teddy advised him to take cues from Cam and Gus and not force a fit, saying the Ryders, including Cam, make room for people as they are. After a warm, teasing exchange—during which Teddy ribbed Dusty about his full name—she left when Gus honked, and Dusty stayed to think about family, the future, and his enduring love for Cam.
Seeing Cam’s kitchen light on, Dusty went to her back door. Cam, working in an oversize T-shirt and no pants, let him in with a joking warning about “no funny business.” They bantered about Teddy discovering Dusty’s full name and then discussed the public nature of their relationship after the game. Both agreed they were unbothered by small-town scrutiny and described their relationship as “permanent.”
Cam climbed into Dusty’s lap and they kissed, with Cam pausing to say she did not want to waste more time after years apart. They resumed, and the scene turned intimate. Dusty was attentive and communicative, asking consent and checking in as they moved from foreplay to sex on the couch. Their encounter emphasized mutual desire, playfulness, and Dusty’s “I’ve got you” reassurance, culminating in both of them reaching climax.
After cleaning up, they curled together on the couch. Cam asked Dusty to stay the night because she wanted to wake up with him and avoid another goodbye. Dusty agreed, deepening the sense that their reconciliation was settled and lasting.
