Chapter 8: (I’m) Never Going Back Again
Contains spoilersOverview
Jo woke up at her parents' house and discovered that the disembodied male voice from the previous night was still in her head. After testing whether they could hear each other's thoughts, Jo wrestled with the possibility that she was hallucinating. To confirm the voice was real, she called the number he provided from the landline, and the same voice answered, proving he was a real person connected to her telepathically.
Summary
In the morning, Jo heard a male voice in her head greeting her. Startled, she searched for a prank, suspecting her brother Mitch, but only her father, Hank, appeared in the kitchen, unaware of any voice. The voice reminded Jo of the previous night and implied they had communicated then.
Jo tried to verify if anyone else could hear it, but Hank could not. The voice suggested they could hear many of each other’s thoughts and referenced Jo’s drunken sing-along on her way home. Skeptical, Jo tested the telepathic link by thinking an insult about his attractiveness; the voice reacted immediately, confirming he heard her thought.
When Jo demanded proof of the prior night, the voice correctly identified the song Jo sang—"Wherever" by Roman Fell—convincing her that he truly heard her. Jo spiraled through explanations ranging from stress to outlandish scenarios, while the voice claimed he had already spent the night adjusting to the situation.
To confirm he was real and not a hallucination, the voice proposed a phone call. Jo refused to give her cell number but used her parents’ landline to call the number he provided. As the phone rang, she braced for the possibility this was all in her head.
When the call connected, the same deep, gravelly voice answered, matching the one in her mind. The chapter ended with the voice asking how he sounded in real life, proving he was a real person and that their telepathic connection was genuine.
