Chapter 22: (Never Look Back and Say It) Could Have Been Me
Contains spoilersOverview
Jo arrived at the Revelry to find Wyn cleaning out old boxes, which led to a rare, candid conversation about Wyn’s past with Roman Fell and the Boulevard and her choice to stay in Vienna Shores. A brief lapse in Wyn’s memory while opening bottles underscored her progressing dementia. The moment was punctured by Mitch and Gigi stumbling out from backstage mid-tryst, turning tension into laughter. The chapter closed with Jo reflecting on alternate paths and how dreams can change.
Summary
Jo reached the Revelry and noticed the office in disarray from someone sorting old storage. Hearing Roman Fell and the Boulevard on the jukebox, Jo found her mother, Wyn, humming along and sifting through boxes at the bar. They began going through photos and memorabilia that spanned years of family and venue history, including pictures of Jo and Mitch as children, their father performing poetry, and old staff.
As the music shifted to “Wherever,” Wyn showed Jo a photo of herself onstage as a young backup singer with the Boulevard, taken the night Wyn met Jo’s father. Jo pressed gently about Wyn’s past, wanting to know more before memory loss took those stories away. Wyn initially deflected, but Jo’s vulnerability prompted Wyn to share more.
Wyn explained being worn out by life on the road and not wanting to become a washed-up musician. She described the magic she felt at the Revelry, meeting Jo’s father, and the wild horses the next morning. That same night, Roman Fell’s demo for “Wherever” attracted industry interest, and Wyn faced a choice between going to LA with the band or staying in Vienna Shores. She chose to stay, saying she would not trade either her years with the band or her life at the Revelry.
While fetching drinks, Wyn momentarily forgot how to use the bottle opener, and Jo quietly demonstrated. The lapse made Wyn flustered and Jo concerned, but they exchanged reassurances and “I love yous” before resuming their conversation. Jo asked if Wyn regretted not following the band to success, but Wyn said dreams can change and expressed pride in Jo’s achievements.
A crash backstage broke the mood. Jo and Wyn discovered Mitch and Georgia “Gigi” Simmons stumbling out, disheveled and laughing after a clandestine make-out session. The four shared teasing banter that erupted into collective laughter, shifting the scene from anxiety to warmth.
Afterward, Jo reflected on what she missed while living in LA and wondered how her dreams might have evolved if she had stayed. She questioned whether there could be other dreams for her, possibly tied to the Revelry, acknowledging how choices shape the paths not taken.
