Chapter 29: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)
Contains spoilersOverview
Jo spent the morning at Gigi and Mitch’s place after leaving home the previous night, and finally confessed her year-long writer’s block. The conversation with Gigi turned tense as they clashed over privilege, choices, and staying versus leaving, exposing Gigi’s own dissatisfaction and unspoken response to Mitch’s proposal. Jo left feeling uncertain about her future and whether to give up on music.
Summary
After crashing on Gigi and Mitch’s couch, Jo brewed coffee and waited for Gigi, who returned exhausted from working a retirement home gig. They exchanged small talk before Gigi asked about Sebastian, but Jo revealed the deeper issue: she had not been able to write since Wyn’s diagnosis, felt empty, and fantasized about a nine-to-five job with stability.
Gigi pushed back, insisting Jo could choose that path but would never be satisfied because she was “living the dream.” Jo bristled, arguing that nothing felt possible while she was blocked and that everything at home seemed to be falling apart. Gigi bluntly said Jo had left, so of course life in Vienna Shores moved on without her, and that constant stasis would be exhausting for those who stayed.
Jo admitted she wished she had stayed, prompting Gigi to confess her own frustrations about staying: feeling invisible and only valued by retirement home residents or as a barback at the Revelry. When Jo asked when Mitch had proposed, Gigi’s silence confirmed it had already happened and that she had not answered him.
Mitch briefly entered with Buckley the dog, greeted them, and left again to walk the dog, unaware of the tension. After he stepped out, Jo advised Gigi not to leave Mitch hanging if she did not want to marry him. Gigi said it was complicated.
Gigi told Jo that staying would mean losing a lot, and accused Jo of forgetting those costs. Jo, already feeling the weight of sacrifice and doubt about her career, wondered if continuing to pursue music in Los Angeles was worth the unhappiness—and whether she should give up.
When Mitch and Buckley returned, Jo had already changed back into her clothes from the night before. She kissed Mitch on the cheek, said goodbye, and left before the conversation escalated further.
