Chapter 12: (You Can Call Me a Fool) I Only Wanna Be with You
Contains spoilersOverview
Jo spent the day with her mother Wyn, delivering Wyn's weekly mixtape to Uncle Rick's floating margarita bar, the Marge. Amid signs of Wyn's decline and family news, Jo managed another brief telepathic exchange with "Sasha." Conversations with Wyn and Uncle Rick about creativity and change encouraged Jo to follow her joy despite pressure after her last hit. The chapter closed with music, memories, and the sense of an era ending as Roman Fell’s retirement echoed the Revelry’s impending closure.
Summary
From the kitchen, Jo watched Uncle Rick’s Margarita Barge approach while Wyn flipped increasingly burnt pancakes and hummed Earth, Wind & Fire. Wyn chatted about the wild horses’ annual migration through Vienna Shores and her volunteering at the sanctuary, and Jo asked to spend the day with her. They planned to deliver Wyn’s weekly mixtape to Uncle Rick, a long-standing ritual.
At the beach, Jo and Wyn swam to the Marge, where Uncle Rick greeted them warmly. Wyn handed over Mixtape #1,899, which Uncle Rick played, starting with Billy Joel’s “Only the Good Die Young.” Uncle Rick, a close family friend and godfather, embodied easygoing wisdom and nostalgia, his boat running on old tech that still used literal cassette tapes.
As Jo settled in with water and Wyn ordered a virgin margarita, Jo suddenly heard Sasha’s voice in her head, fretting about his father’s retirement. Jo acknowledged him mentally, and they kept the exchange brief, labeling it “family stuff,” while Jo maintained boundaries around anonymity.
Wyn then confided she suspected Mitch had proposed to Gigi after he asked for Grandma Lark’s ring, swearing Jo to secrecy. When Uncle Rick teased Jo for a hint about her next song, Jo froze, revealing her creative pressure. Wyn and Uncle Rick recalled his “chapple marg” craze and how he later moved on to “piniwi margs,” using it to illustrate a lesson: constant comparison to a past success kills joy.
Uncle Rick advised creating what makes one feel alive, regardless of expectations. The lively scene of the Marge rising with the waves underlined this message as he blended drinks and served beachgoers. Wyn added that when things change, something else fills the space, segueing to the Revelry’s imminent dismantling and asking who might want lobby photos once they come down.
Jo requested the Roman Fell photo if he did not want it. Uncle Rick shared breaking news that Roman Fell was retiring after one last world tour, calling it “the end of an era,” which paralleled Hank and Wyn’s decision to close the Revelry. Wyn reframed it as possibly the beginning of a new era. The mixtape shifted to Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers,” and Wyn sang along, closing the chapter on a bittersweet, hopeful note.
