Chapter 5: Dream (to Me)
Contains spoilersOverview
Jo arrived at the Revelry with her mother and Gigi, soaking in memories of how music first captured her as a child. She took in the hall’s details, reunited with her father and brother Mitch, and noticed unusually sparse attendance and short staffing. As Mitch returned with the night’s cover band and the crowd finally grew, Jo’s parents gathered Jo, Mitch, and Gigi for news. Wyn and Hank announced they planned to close the Revelry at the end of the summer.
Summary
Jo recalled her earliest memory: a rainy mountain festival where her parents danced with her and Mitch during Roman Fell’s set. Hearing her mother sing in the rain revealed to Jo the magic and meaning of music, and that memory explained why the family’s music hall, the Revelry, felt like home and a place where songs and their echoes made her feel alive.
Arriving at the Revelry hand-in-hand with her mother and Gigi, Jo walked through the lobby lined with photos of past performers, including a younger Roman Fell. Her mother, in her dramatic way, called out to Hank behind the bar about finding their “destitute” daughter, and Jo and Hank exchanged warm greetings and jokes. The narrative detailed the venue’s layout and its bar with a framed dollar tied to an old promise.
As opening time approached, Jo expected the usual Thursday rush, but almost no patrons came in. Gigi, covering the understaffed bar, deflected Jo’s concern with a noncommittal explanation about Thursday nights. Jo noticed other staffing gaps—Mitch covering pickup duties that usually belonged to others—and wondered where the sound crew and regular bartenders were.
Near eight o’clock, Mitch burst in with the Revelry van, announcing he had brought the night’s act, the Bushels, a Kate Bush cover band. He and Jo exchanged sibling banter before he finished setting up the stage. The Bushels managed to draw a decent crowd by showtime, helped by the popularity of “Running Up That Hill.”
With the band about to go on, Hank gathered Jo, Mitch, and Gigi at the bar. Wyn took Hank’s hand and said they had been thinking about a difficult decision for some time. Calm but resolute, Wyn announced that they would close the Revelry at the end of the summer, a decision that surprised Jo and underscored earlier hints of dwindling crowds and staff.
