Summary
One evening at sunset, Jo, Sebastian, and Jo's parents sit together, with Jo’s father humming the new song. Jo’s father remarks that the song “sounds like love,” and Jo’s mother tells Sebastian he reminds her of Ami McKellen, sharing stories about Ami for hours. As roads reopen, Sebastian admits he must return to Los Angeles, but he and Jo spend several days helping the town recover and nights together planning uncertain futures.
On a boardwalk outing for Italian ice, Sebastian directly asks how to introduce Jo, prompting them to define their relationship as both girlfriend and partner. As Jo imagines a life in LA, she realizes it is not what she wants and instead declares she wants the Revelry. Sebastian supports the decision, promising music and partnership, and admits LA had made him unhappy. They affirm their commitment to building a life together centered on Jo’s hometown.
Jo tells her parents she intends to buy and run the Revelry; after initial concern, they embrace her choice and encourage her to “chase your joy.” Jo moves home with Sebastian’s help. The psychic link between them never returns, but they keep making music. Sebastian discovers he is a better producer than performer, mentoring artists like Gigi and Willa Grey while splitting time between LA and Vienna Shores and considering building a studio at the Revelry.
As Sebastian produces a hit for Willa Grey, a congratulatory champagne from Roman Fell arrives; Sebastian realizes he no longer needs his father’s approval and gives the bottle away. Jo’s parents throw him a local celebration, and Sebastian tells Willa he is home. In rare Revelry shows, he performs songs he and Jo keep mostly for themselves, and the town collectively preserves his anonymity as a local regular.
That fall, Jo takes her mother and Sebastian to the VMAs, where Roman Fell spots them and flees. Jo’s mother says, “He knows what he did,” implying old wounds between Roman and Ami/Jo’s mother. Although Jo and Willa lose their categories, Jo promises to bring her mother to the Grammys, but later her mother is unable to attend. Jo and her mother continue savoring days together, even attending Roman’s farewell tour for their own closure.
After a Revelry show, Jo’s mother removes a framed dollar bill—the bar’s first—from the wall and gives it to Sebastian, explaining she won it betting that Ami would return. She tells him to buy Jo something nice, symbolizing acceptance and the return of what matters in unexpected ways.
Time passes as Jo, Sebastian, and Jo’s parents watch sunsets from the garden bench. Jo learns the bittersweet patience of grief as her mother fades without a single “last good day.” In the end, Jo holds her mother’s hand and watches the metaphorical sunset of her life until night falls, and her mother dies.
