Chapter 21: If I Had $1,000,000 (Well, I’d Buy You a Green Dress)
Contains spoilersOverview
Jo seeks advice from best friend Georgia "Gigi" Simmons after her disastrous first writing session with Sebastian Fell. While shopping, Jo unexpectedly runs into Sebastian, who says he plans to stay in town to keep cowriting. They reconcile from the argument, share a supportive moment, and agree to meet at noon the next day to work, while Gigi excitedly meets Sebastian and teases Jo about a crush.
Summary
Jo goes shopping with Gigi to get counsel about her private dilemma: the failed first session with Sebastian Fell, who is also her telepathic collaborator "Sasha." Jo admits she is nervous to reach out to him after the argument. Gigi advises Jo to apologize and teases that Jo might have a crush, jokingly blasting a High School Musical song. Jo resists the idea, worried about the messiness of mixing collaboration with attraction.
At a local boutique, Jo tries on a green dress while Gigi shops for tights. Jo suddenly hears Sebastian in her head and discovers him in the store’s men’s section, shopping for clothes because he intends to stay in town longer. Jo starts to apologize mentally; Sebastian also takes responsibility and suggests they forget the fight. When Jo asks why he won’t look at her, he admits she looks lovely in the dress, and says he’s confident in them as collaborators.
Jo impulsively hugs Sebastian, and he reciprocates, lightening the tension. They confirm that cowriting in person will be better than remote collaboration. Sebastian jokes about Fleetwood Mac as a metaphor for their partnership and discusses blending in locally by considering a Hawaiian shirt. His simple “because” for believing in Jo surprises and reassures her.
Jo introduces Sebastian to Gigi, warning him mentally to be nice. Gigi is adorably overwhelmed, hugging Sebastian and blurting that she works at the Revelry. A phone call for Gigi’s singing telegram business interrupts, and after she steps out, Sebastian recognizes one of Jo’s past songs and praises it, showing he knows her work. He suggests that if they get out of their own way, their collaboration could be good, hinting at deeper possibilities that Jo resists as a “bad idea.”
Gigi returns and, for a telegram about a vasectomy, Sebastian suggests the song “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” impressing Gigi. He asks Jo to call him Sasha, which Jo avoids due to the intimacy of the alias. Sebastian leaves with a plan to meet Jo at noon the next day to write. Outside, Gigi teases that it’s not just business, while Jo insists it is.
