Chapter 35: (Take Me On) Take On Me
Contains spoilersOverview
As Hurricane Darcy skirts the coast, Jo and Sebastian (Sasha) spend a secluded day finishing their collaborative love song and deepening their intimacy. When Jo names the song during a call with her manager Rooney, their telepathic connection severs instantly, leaving both reeling from the sudden silence.
Summary
With rain pounding outside, Jo and Sebastian remain indoors, writing, sharing Chinese food, and watching TV between bursts of songwriting. Jo ignores a terse text from Gigi that says they need to talk. The creative collaboration feels uniquely intimate; they effortlessly exchange melodies and words, each anticipating the other’s thoughts, and Jo fears she will never experience this again.
They continue refining the song at the piano, infusing it with personal details and emotion, even as they notice the mental melody between them is fading. Seeking distraction from the looming loss, Jo draws Sebastian into bed; afterward they lie together, listening to the storm. Jo admits she fears unpredictable changes more than the hurricane itself, and Sebastian argues change can be good. Their attraction deepens, and Jo wonders whether their connection will survive once the song is finished.
Back at the piano, they bring the song to near completion and acknowledge their link is almost gone. Sebastian offers Jo the honor of naming the song, but they postpone the decision to make breakfast. Jo receives a call from her LA manager, Rooney, who shares major career news: Willa Grey will perform Jo’s earlier song “If You Stayed” at the VMAs, potentially positioning Jo for further accolades.
Amid Jo’s spiraling excitement and anxiety, she tells Rooney she and Sebastian have just finished a new song together and wants a cowriting arrangement with Sebastian as performer; Rooney agrees and offers to draft the legal paperwork. When Rooney asks for the song’s title to complete the contract, Jo searches the lyrics and chooses a name.
The instant Jo speaks the title, the telepathic bond snaps—“like a light switch turned off.” Jo is devastated by the sudden emptiness where Sebastian’s thoughts used to be. Sebastian returns from the kitchen looking shocked and heartbroken and asks what she named it. Jo realizes she did not want the connection to end and breaks down, and Sebastian gently comforts her, praising her for finishing the song even as both grapple with the sense of loss.
