After learning that Gabriel White was both her Specter father and Blackwell’s former bargain-holder, Ophelia nearly gives up. She lies in bed until the dinner bell, briefly thinking disqualification would be easier, but forces herself to keep going because she needs to prove she can finish Phantasma. When she finally reaches the dining hall, she coldly rebuffs Luci’s concern, notes that only thirteen contestants remain in her group, and is startled when Jasper appears as the Devil presiding over level four, Gluttony.

The new trial places all thirteen contestants on a chessboard-like grid, each trapped in place by an iron collar and chains that restrict movement to a path. A wall of paired levers bears every contestant’s name, one marked with a check and one with a cross. When limited gold bars appear in front of them, the first contestants to move claim them, but anyone who moves too late triggers swinging pendulum blades. Becca misses her chance, desperately crawls forward, and summons more saws with each move before calling Jasper to remove her. In the next rush, Luci reaches the gold in time, but James and Cade do not, which adds still more blades and makes the board increasingly lethal for everyone.

Cade crawls through the danger to the lever wall and realizes the room’s perimeter is safe. From there, he immediately acts against Ophelia by pulling the harmful lever under her name, then another lever that removes his own collar and chains. As chaos erupts, Ophelia summons Blackwell. Blackwell explains that the levers create future advantages or disadvantages for the named contestants, and that a key on the wall behind her will release her collar and open the exit. Using her magic, Ophelia turns invisible from the neck down and slips free of the metal collar, then begins crossing the grid while Blackwell times the pendulums and directs her step by step.

As Ophelia advances, the trial worsens. James loses an arm to one of the blades and, unable to continue, takes Jasper’s hand to leave Phantasma. Water then pours from the ceiling, which Blackwell identifies as another punishment triggered by the levers Cade pulled; the trial punishes excess and selfishness collectively. Blackwell tears Ophelia’s gown shorter so she can move more easily and steadies her through the slick footing, guiding her toward the lever wall as she narrowly avoids the blades.

Near the end of the crossing, Eric realizes Ophelia used invisibility and briefly sees Blackwell helping her. Convinced she is cheating or allied with demons, Eric decides to kill her and attacks her on the grid. Ophelia escapes his first assault, then knees him when he grabs her again. Seeing a pendulum swinging behind her, she deliberately backs into its path and lets Eric lunge for her in blind rage, turning his attack into a trap as the blade swings back down toward him.
