Chapter 46

Overview

Genevieve reunites with Ophelia, and the sisters finally exchange the secrets that have divided them: the truth about their parents, their mother’s debts, Gabriel White’s attempts to return, and Genevieve’s long-hidden magic. Their conversation reframes their family history, revealing that both daughters inherited Specter abilities and that their mother’s choices were driven by fear of Gabriel finding them.

Just as importantly, the chapter repairs the sisters’ relationship. By the end, Genevieve accepts how much Ophelia has changed in Phantasma, Ophelia regains hope, and they join forces to solve the urgent problem of Blackwell’s claim on ten years of Ophelia’s life.

Summary

Genevieve arrives at Ophelia’s room just after interrupting an intimate moment between Ophelia and Blackwell. After a sharp joke and a blunt question about Blackwell’s intentions, Blackwell tactfully leaves so the sisters can speak alone. Once they are by themselves, the reunion turns into an argument: Ophelia is furious that Genevieve entered Phantasma, while Genevieve is equally angry that Ophelia read her diary. Their fight quickly exposes the deeper wound between them: both sisters have been hiding major truths out of fear, duty, and misplaced protection.

Sitting together like they did as children, the sisters begin telling each other everything. Genevieve explains that she investigated Phantasma after discovering their parents met there and that a curse shaped their family’s fate. She intercepted letters from Gabriel White, tracked his movements, and learned their mother’s debts were tied to secret preparations to protect them. Genevieve reveals that their mother had made a deal with a Devil after Gabriel tried to return through Phantasma, and that she spent much of the family fortune securing a hidden, heavily warded second home in case they had to flee him.

In return, Ophelia recounts her own experience in Phantasma, including what Blackwell has told her about their father and the dangers she has survived. She also tells Genevieve that she spoke to their mother through the Whispering Gate and passes along their mother’s message of love. When Genevieve explains that a Devil with red catlike eyes directed her to Ophelia’s room, Ophelia realizes it was Sinclair, which adds new suspicion to his interest in them. The conversation then shifts when Genevieve reveals how she survived the manor: she can disappear at will.

Ophelia recognizes that power immediately and tells Genevieve that it means she is a Specter too. Genevieve admits she has controlled this ability since childhood and hid it because she feared their mother would confine her the way Ophelia was burdened by family expectations. This confession leads to a more painful but honest exchange about how differently their mother treated them, how lonely Ophelia felt when she learned Genevieve had an entire social world she never shared, and how much Genevieve has always resented Ophelia sacrificing her own life for the family. Both sisters finally say plainly that they need each other and promise not to drift apart.

After reconciling, they discuss recent events in Phantasma. Ophelia tells Genevieve that Luci is alive but cursed, and that she killed Cade in the final level because it was him or her. Genevieve is shocked by how much Ophelia has changed, but she also tells Ophelia she is proud of her. Ophelia apologizes for the cruel words she said before Genevieve left, and Genevieve assures her she was always coming to Phantasma because she wanted, for once, to help Ophelia instead of being protected by her. By the end of the chapter, the sisters are united again, and Genevieve turns their focus to the immediate problem ahead: they have forty-eight hours to find a way to keep Ophelia from owing Blackwell ten years of her life.
