Chapter 11
Overview
Ophelia’s attempt to lie low fails when her room becomes a haunt, forcing her through a black void of whispers and into the dining hall, where she reunites with the mysterious Phantom. In hiding, he identifies the void as the Whispering Gate, a place mortals should not be able to access, suggesting Ophelia’s Necromancy makes her uniquely significant within Phantasma. Their conversation sharpens the stakes around Genevieve, Gabriel, and Blackwell’s hidden motives, ending with his revelation that Ophelia is the person he has been waiting for.
Summary
Back in room 426, Ophelia tries to steady herself after hearing what may have been Genevieve’s scream and after another unsettling encounter with the green-eyed Phantom. She blocks the suspicious bookshelf with a chair, changes into a dress better suited for movement, and resolves to survive Phantasma by taking as few risks as possible. Even so, thoughts of the Phantom unsettle her enough to show how dangerous a distraction he could become.
The next morning, Ophelia discovers that her bathroom has transformed into a haunt: blood covers the walls, blood drips from the tub faucet, and a Ghoul crawls out toward her. She cannot open the door at first, and when it finally gives way, the hallway is gone and only a black void remains. Forced to choose between the Ghoul and the darkness, Ophelia steps into the void and falls through a place filled with whispers, secrets, and fragments of voices before crashing through the dining hall ceiling.
She lands directly in front of the Phantom, who is amused rather than surprised. As they talk, he explains that Ghouls, Apparitions, and the Devils running Phantasma rely on repeated terror tactics, and he is alarmed to learn that Ophelia reached him by passing through a whispering void. Sensing that they are being watched, he quickly moves her out of the dining hall and hides her in a broom closet so she will not be discovered outside her room during a haunt.
In private, the Phantom presses Ophelia for details and identifies the place she crossed as the Whispering Gate, a threshold on the Other Side that mortals should not be able to access. He concludes that her Necromancy may explain why the wards around Phantasma have reacted strangely to her and why they were able to interact before she formally entered. He also warns her not to assume any being in Phantasma is acting out of kindness, because every apparent favor is likely self-serving.
Ophelia tells him she entered Phantasma only to find Genevieve and bring her home, not to win the competition, and she mentions that Genevieve’s diary named someone called Gabriel. The Phantom’s brief reaction suggests that name matters, but he refuses to answer directly. When Ophelia again asks what he wants in exchange for help, he sidesteps the terms, gives the name Blackwell, and prompts her to share hers. After she introduces herself as Ophelia Grimm, Blackwell tells her that she is exactly the person he has been waiting for.
