Chapter 28
Overview
Ophelia and Blackwell’s attempt to identify Gabriel in old contestant records leads nowhere, shifting the chapter’s focus from investigation to emotional revelation. In the drinking parlor, Ophelia finally voices her hurt over Genevieve’s secrets and her resentment at being trapped by the Grimm family legacy, while Blackwell urges her to imagine a life chosen for herself. When alcohol lowers her guard and she reaches for him again, Blackwell refuses to take advantage, showing real care and deepening the bond between them.
Summary
Ophelia wakes in the middle of the night to find Blackwell still with her, now in ghost form and studying the book of Phantasma’s past contestants. Although she tries to dismiss their night together as meaningless, she cannot ignore how rested and comforted she feels with him nearby. Blackwell magically dresses her, tells her he has already found several entries for contestants named Gabriel, and offers to let her rest while he keeps searching.
When a scheduled haunt erupts in the hallway, Blackwell says he already handled Ophelia’s own haunt and takes her somewhere quieter. He briefly brings her to the dining hall so she can eat, then leads her to the drinking parlor. There, Ophelia reviews the marked entries, hoping one Gabriel will feel familiar or trigger a response from her locket, but none of them do. Frustrated, she concludes the search may be useless, especially without Genevieve to connect the clues.
The failed search pushes Ophelia into admitting how deeply Genevieve’s secrecy has wounded her. She tells Blackwell that Genevieve avoided the family’s strange legacy for years, yet secretly entered Phantasma and hid an entire life from her. Ophelia also reveals that she accepted being the sister who carried the Grimm burden because she believed Genevieve would at least live the normal life Ophelia could never have. Blackwell challenges that idea, arguing that normality is dull and that Ophelia could choose her own life, but Ophelia insists she cannot abandon twenty generations of Grimm necromancers.
To calm her nerves, Blackwell gives Ophelia bourbon. She keeps drinking until she becomes openly drunk, affectionate, and emotionally exposed. Ophelia compliments his eyes, admits discomfort with her own magic-altered appearance, and nearly initiates another kiss while trying to articulate her feelings about him. Blackwell stops her, saying they need to sober up first, then gently settles her on the couch with a blanket and remains beside her as she falls asleep. His restraint and care make their growing attachment even harder for Ophelia to deny.
