Chapter 43
Overview
Level seven forces the remaining contestants into a token-based dilemma, and with Blackwell’s help Ophelia turns it into a direct confrontation with Cade while freeing Charlotte. The chapter ends with Ophelia killing Cade in a brutal fight after reclaiming her stolen locket, removing a major enemy but revealing how dangerously comfortable she is becoming with violence. That shift matters because the Shadow Voice immediately seizes on it, suggesting Ophelia’s growing power may also be changing her.
Summary
Ophelia prepares for level seven, motivated by the chance to finally leave this wing of Phantasma and search for Genevieve. At breakfast, Charlotte explains that Leon forfeited during the night after being attacked by a swarm of crows, apparently his greatest fear, while Cade angrily rages about Luci’s fate. Ophelia realizes Phantasma still has not confronted her with her own greatest fear, which makes her uneasy.
Before the trial begins, Blackwell appears in ghost form and quietly warns Ophelia to summon him inside the level because his guidance will be crucial. The Devil presents a clear riddle about choosing one or two obsidian tokens: depending on how the three remaining contestants choose, one person may go free while the others are forced to fight. Once inside her holding room, Ophelia summons Blackwell, who scouts the other players’ choices and returns to report that Charlotte took one token and Cade took both.
Knowing the outcome, Ophelia immediately chooses both tokens as well, deliberately ensuring Charlotte will be released and that Cade will be trapped with her in combat. When the arena opens, Charlotte acknowledges Ophelia’s choice and leaves through the newly appeared door, while Cade approaches eagerly, convinced he will enjoy killing her. He spews hatred about Ophelia’s magic, her family, and all paranormal beings, while Blackwell burns with anger at his insults.
Ophelia answers Cade’s taunts by openly claiming her identity as a Necromancer and attacking with the focused magic Blackwell taught her. Her blasts burn Cade and gradually weaken him, but he keeps advancing. To keep her concentration, she orders Blackwell away, then continues fighting alone, using both magic and invisibility to evade Cade and punish him when he overcommits.
The fight turns dangerous when Cade manages to tear off Ophelia’s locket, causing her body to weaken and her heart to slow. Realizing she will die without it, Ophelia pretends to collapse so Cade will come close, then turns the locket and herself invisible long enough to reclaim it and fasten it back around her neck. With her strength restored, she batters Cade physically, knocks him down, and pins him to the ground.
As the Shadow Voice urges her to savor the violence, Ophelia tells Cade she will give him a quicker death than he deserves. After hearing his final curse, she channels the rest of her magic into his head and kills him, melting through his skull. When the fight ends, Ophelia notices that unlike after killing Eric, she does not feel immediate shame; instead, she is disturbed to realize she likes the blood on her hands, and the Shadow Voice urges her to embrace that darkness.
