Chapter 19
Overview
Ophelia and Blackwell fail to find the hidden key, but their search produces a more important breakthrough: Ophelia learns Blackwell remembers only what happens inside Phantasma’s competitions, deepening the mystery of who or what he was before. Their growing attraction becomes impossible to ignore, then Jasper interrupts to warn Ophelia that Blackwell has a dangerous history with contestants. The chapter raises both emotional and literal stakes by ending with Blackwell’s revelation that the next trial will be based on Lust.
Summary
Ophelia and Blackwell spend an hour and a half searching several rooms in Grimm Manor for a key or any clue tied to Blackwell’s missing memories, but they find nothing. After a fruitless stop in a cold drinking parlor, they move to the library, where Ophelia does the physical searching while Blackwell lounges by the fire. Frustrated by his teasing and vagueness, Ophelia throws a book at him, and Blackwell phases through it before telling her she is still searching too literally.
Blackwell explains that he chose Ophelia because she can perceive hidden things other contestants missed, and he urges her to look beyond obvious objects like bookshelves and books. Ophelia reasons that she may need to feel connected to what she is searching for, so she begins asking Blackwell about himself. Blackwell reveals that he remembers nothing from before Phantasma’s competitions and only retains memories from within the game, which confirms why he forgot meeting Ophelia earlier.
The conversation turns more serious as Ophelia asks whether Blackwell might have died in Phantasma or once been a contestant. Blackwell says he has considered that possibility, but notes that dead contestants usually become ordinary Apparitions, while he became a Phantom and avoids becoming a Ghoul through bargains. Ophelia shares what she knows about Phantoms in necromancy, suggesting he may once have been an immortal, but Blackwell lightens the mood with flirtation, and the two continue learning small personal details about each other.
Their privacy ends when Jasper, the man who first admitted Ophelia into Phantasma, appears in the library. Ophelia sees that Jasper bears a Devil’s Mark: a third golden eye hidden beneath his hat. Jasper mocks Blackwell’s interest in Ophelia, implies Blackwell has grown dangerously involved with past contestants, and warns Ophelia to guard her heart.
After leaving with Blackwell, Ophelia presses him about Jasper’s insinuations and asks whether kissing is usually part of Blackwell’s bargains. Blackwell laughs off Jasper’s taunts, insists Jasper was provoking them, and their banter becomes openly charged when he calls out Ophelia for lying about not wanting to kiss him. Before the moment can go further, the dinner bell rings, and Blackwell tells Ophelia to eat before level two begins and to summon him during the trial. He then reveals the theme of the next circle: Lust.
