Chapter 35
Overview
After the Wrath trial, Ophelia learns more about the other contestants’ losses, then becomes deeply unsettled when Sinclair and Jasper imply that Blackwell is with Rayea. In a vulnerable confrontation, Blackwell explains he never heard Ophelia’s summons through Sinclair’s illusion, denies any current attachment to Rayea, and admits that his bond with Ophelia is real and singular.
The chapter shifts their relationship decisively: Ophelia confesses both her jealousy and her fear of the darkness inside her, while Blackwell reassures her that her choices define her more than her violent thoughts. By the end, Ophelia abandons her demand for distance, and the two fully reconnect.
Summary
After the Wrath trial ends, the surviving contestants return to the dining room in tense silence. Everyone is wary of Cade after his violent outburst, and he soon leaves with Beau. Luci confirms that Cade is her cousin, laments Edna’s loss because Edna entered Phantasma to bring back her little brother Michael, and praises Ophelia for using her newfound invisibility to save Edna when no one else acted.
Once the others disperse, Ophelia stays behind to eat and avoid being cornered elsewhere. Sinclair appears and taunts her about Blackwell, claiming Blackwell ran off with Rayea and revealing they were once lovers. Jasper then arrives and, with obvious enjoyment, confirms that Blackwell is with Rayea. Their combined needling stirs intense jealousy in Ophelia, sending her back to her room upset and feeling betrayed despite telling herself she has no claim on Blackwell.
In the bath, Ophelia briefly finds calm until the Shadow Voice returns and pressures her into tapping the tub three times to make it stop. She gives in, then feels anger and shame at her inability to resist the compulsions completely. As she submerges herself, Blackwell suddenly appears beside the tub, and their conversation immediately turns confrontational when he questions why she did not let him know she survived the trial.
Ophelia accuses Blackwell of abandoning her when Sinclair trapped her in the library illusion, explaining that she summoned him three times and he never came. Blackwell tells Ophelia that Sinclair’s magic blocked the summons, and he insists that if he had heard her, nothing would have kept him away. When Ophelia asks whether he had just come from Rayea, Blackwell explains that Rayea only helped him repay Jasper for the contestant logs, that Rayea deliberately tried to provoke Ophelia, and that any past intimacy between Blackwell and Rayea ended long ago.
While washing Ophelia’s back and hair in an unexpectedly tender scene, Blackwell opens up further. He says his past encounters with Rayea were empty distractions from loneliness, but Ophelia is unforgettable to him. He reveals that he felt drawn to her, not merely to her father’s bloodline, from the moment she entered Phantasma, and that even after losing memories of their first meeting, they still kept finding each other.
That honesty lets Ophelia confess her deeper fears: she admits she killed Eric and that the voice in her head keeps urging her toward violence. Blackwell reframes Eric’s death as self-defense and tells her that goodness is measured by actions, not by intrusive thoughts. When Ophelia apologizes for falling for Sinclair’s trap and for being jealous, Blackwell asks whether she still wants distance; Ophelia finally admits she does not want space at all, and the chapter ends with them passionately reconciling.
