Chapter 34
Overview
Ophelia escapes Sinclair’s illusion just in time to enter Wrath, but arriving late costs her the level’s clue and leaves her at a disadvantage. The trial reveals that the contestants have effectively chosen Cade as the one who should not advance, pushing the group into a violent standoff over whether anyone will forfeit. When Cade nearly kills Edna to force the others’ hands, Ophelia uses her invisibility to stop him, and Edna’s panicked bargain with Rayea shows how quickly Wrath is breaking the remaining players.
Summary
After Sinclair’s ballroom illusion collapses, Ophelia is left in intense pain and disoriented from the backlash of broken magic. Blackwell forces her to move because level five has already begun while she was trapped. He blinks her to the dining room entrance just in time, where Rayea taunts both of them, refuses to give Ophelia the missed clue for Wrath, and leaves Ophelia entering the level angry, jealous, and unprepared.
Inside Wrath, Ophelia appears in a tiny sealed chamber and struggles against rising panic in the confined space. A hidden panel eventually reveals two choices, and she pulls the handle marked wrath rather than forfeit. A second panel shows the contestants’ names, and Ophelia chooses Cade. The walls then collapse, revealing the surviving contestants together and confirming that several others are gone from the previous level. Luci explains the missed clue: if six of seven contestants chose the same person, only one person would fail to advance. Charlotte immediately states that everyone clearly chose Cade.
Cade refuses to accept the group’s judgment and argues that survival matters more than fairness. When the group debates alternatives, Luci suggests that someone could take a Devil’s bargain instead of dying, but no one volunteers to forfeit. Cade escalates the situation by targeting Ophelia over Eric’s death, then abruptly grabs Edna in a chokehold and threatens to kill her unless someone gives in. Ophelia hesitates while the Shadow Voice urges her to let Edna die, but as Edna begins to lose consciousness, Ophelia decides she will not become that kind of monster.
Ophelia turns invisible, uses the surprise to knock Cade down, and buys the others time to help Edna breathe again. She lands several blows on Cade before her invisibility fails, but the intervention is enough to break his hold. Once Edna revives, terror overwhelms her; instead of staying in the trial, she begs Rayea for a bargain and for release. Rayea appears immediately and removes Edna from the room, ending the chapter with the group shaken and Wrath still unresolved.
