Chapter 47
Overview
Ophelia, Genevieve, and Blackwell briefly enjoy searching Phantasma together, but the chapter turns when Blackwell reveals that the remaining contestants are beginning to kill each other before level eight because only one person can reach level nine. Sinclair’s taunting appearance confirms that Genevieve staying with Ophelia likely serves a dangerous hidden agenda. In response, Ophelia admits that she no longer wants the future she once chased and persuades Genevieve to forfeit, marking a major shift in Ophelia’s priorities.
Summary
On night nine, Ophelia, Genevieve, and Blackwell spend hours searching more floors and rooms of Phantasma for clues and other remaining contestants. During the search, Genevieve peppers Blackwell with irreverent questions, and the three briefly settle into an easy, almost normal rhythm that makes Ophelia ache because she knows her time with Blackwell is running out. They realize the manor’s wings contain the same kinds of rooms layered across different planes, which explains how messages might have been left between groups and frustrates Ophelia for all the time she spent worrying about Genevieve.
The mood stays playful as Genevieve tries to invent a team name, Blackwell jokes with both sisters, and Poe the ghost cat briefly appears. When Ophelia decides they should stop for the night, Genevieve announces that she will share Ophelia’s room from now on. Blackwell agrees that it is the safest choice, but the decision quietly hurts Ophelia because it confirms that her last private night with Blackwell is already behind them. After Genevieve leaves to collect her things, Blackwell brings Ophelia back to her room, and they share a tender goodbye before he vanishes.
The next day, Ophelia wakes to the chaos of Genevieve’s belongings spread across the room and pushes her sister to get ready so they can resume searching. When Blackwell finally arrives, his mood is serious. He warns them that the remaining contestants from other groups have started hunting people before the next stage because only one person can attempt level nine, making this point in the competition especially dangerous.
That warning forces the sisters to confront what should happen next. Ophelia argues that Genevieve should leave now rather than risk level eight, but Genevieve resists because she refuses to abandon Ophelia after coming this far. Their argument is interrupted by Sinclair, who appears only to unsettle them. He taunts Blackwell, hints at Ophelia’s history with both of them, and strongly implies that it would serve his interests if the Grimm sisters stayed together, which makes Blackwell and Ophelia even more certain that Genevieve should not remain.
After Sinclair disappears, Ophelia explains that he is always acting for himself and cannot be trusted. She then tells Genevieve that her mission is already complete: Genevieve brought Ophelia into Phantasma, saved her from the life she thought she wanted, and changed her understanding of her future. Ophelia admits that she no longer wants the same things she once did, including the path that led toward Grimm Manor, and asks Genevieve not to risk another trial unnecessarily.
Genevieve finally accepts Ophelia’s reasoning and agrees to forfeit, though she asks to stay a little longer. Ophelia allows Genevieve to remain until dinner so they can say goodbye properly. The chapter ends with Ophelia having secured Genevieve’s safety, while also revealing that her own desires and loyalties have shifted in ways that point directly toward Blackwell and away from her old ambitions.
