During a highstorm, Dalinar witnesses the Day of Recreance at Feverstone Keep as Radiants discard their Plate and Blades. The vision’s voice warns of the Everstorm and repeats the command to unite. Summary
As a highstorm approaches, Adolin argues against Dalinar’s decision to abdicate the princedom, fearing the consequences and not wanting command. Dalinar, convinced his unpredictable visions make him unreliable, plans to return to Alethkar and aid the queen. He has Adolin tie him to a chair as the storm begins.
In the vision, Dalinar appears at Feverstone Keep, a reserve fortress behind an active front. A massive force of Knights Radiant—Stonewards and Windrunners—arrives, then silently plants their Shardblades and abandons their Shardplate. Dalinar feels an overwhelming sense of loss as the Blades’ glow fades. Soldiers rush out to claim the weapons, sparking chaos and killings. A Radiant bearing the familiar voice tells him the events will be infamous and warns of the Night of Sorrows, True Desolation, and Everstorm, adding, “Read the book. Unite them.”
Dalinar returns to himself to find Adolin and Renarin shaken by his thrashing. He admits the visions could be madness or something supernatural, even noting he once sought the Old Magic, though he doubts it is the source. Renarin proposes testing the visions against history; Dalinar agrees to dictate fresh details for verification, starting with “Feverstone Keep.”
Dalinar authorizes Adolin to prepare contingencies if Sadeas turns on them, even as he hopes to avoid fracturing Alethkar. Navani arrives to scribe the vision and will contact Jasnah. After gently steering Adolin away, Navani seeks a private moment; Dalinar, clinging to his codes and fearing hypocrisy, firmly refuses her advances.
Left alone, Dalinar remains unsettled but committed: he will seek proof of the visions’ authenticity, hold to his honor, and be ready should Sadeas move, while the command to unite still weighs on him.
