5. Heretic
Contains spoilersOverview
Shallan finally meets Jasnah Kholin in Kharbranth and undergoes a sharp, humbling evaluation while accompanying King Taravangian. When a cave-in traps the king’s granddaughter, Jasnah Soulcasts a massive boulder into smoke to free them, proving her fabrial’s power. Despite this shared ordeal, Jasnah rejects Shallan’s petition. Desperate to save her failing house, Shallan resolves to persist—and to steal Jasnah’s Soulcaster.
Summary
An ominous death-quote warns of the True Desolation. In Kharbranth’s palace, Shallan is surprised by Jasnah Kholin’s poise and beauty, and notes the distinctive Soulcaster on Jasnah’s hand. Jasnah walks with an elderly, richly robed man whom Shallan recognizes as King Taravangian. Invited to join them, Shallan explains her delayed arrival and learns Jasnah will only consider a petition, not a guaranteed wardship.
As they walk, Jasnah conducts a brisk evaluation. Shallan sings on command and details her language skills, but falters under questions about rigorous writing, logicmasters, and history. She admits strengths in the sciences, particularly biology and botany, yet her temper shows; she apologizes. Jasnah remarks that many petition her and remains skeptical of Shallan’s preparation.
The party reaches a corridor blocked by a fallen monolith; Taravangian’s granddaughter is trapped beyond. Jasnah organizes the scene and tests Shallan’s practicality by asking for the stone’s mass, then presses her Soulcaster to the boulder. With a thunder of pressure and a burst of black smoke, Jasnah transforms the stone into smoke, freeing the trapped child and attendants. Taravangian embraces his granddaughter, while Jasnah appears composed, even pleased by the scent of smoke.
In the aftermath, Jasnah turns back to Shallan and delivers her decision: rejection. Shallan tries to pivot to her strongest skill—drawing and painting—but Jasnah dismisses the visual arts as frivolous. Jasnah declines a feast and departs for the Palanaeum with the king, leaving Shallan behind.
Left alone, Shallan wrestles with despair but steels herself. Remembering her family’s peril, she rededicates herself to the plan conceived months earlier with her brothers: gain proximity to Jasnah, learn where the fabrial is kept, and steal the Soulcaster to save House Davar.
