Summary
One week after Dunny’s death, Sadeas reaches a chrysalis first but risks being surrounded. Dalinar Kholin’s army arrives with chull-drawn siege bridges and, with two Shardbearers leaping first, joins Sadeas in a coordinated assault that crushes the Parshendi between their forces. Kaladin remains wary of lighteyed reputations despite the effective partnership.
That same day, Hashal sends Bridge Four to scavenge the chasms. They discover a lighteyed officer’s fortune, including an emerald broam and many lesser spheres. Kaladin decides they must turn in the broam to appear honest but find a way to keep the smaller spheres for food and medical supplies. He debates escape versus training, recalls his uncanny healing and a dream-city that Sigzil confirms is real, and resolves that the men will still need to fight.
As the men work, Sigzil—pressed by Maps—shares Emuli customs and their devotion to Jezrien, while Kaladin quietly stashes spears for future training. Syl leads them to fresher bodies, mostly Parshendi; Shen reacts fiercely when Kaladin moves a Parshendi corpse, forcing Teft and Moash to restrain him. Kaladin orders respectful scavenging anyway, balancing Shen’s feelings with the crew’s needs, and they recover a Parshendi bow and arrows though none are trained.
Near a permanent bridge, Kaladin proposes tying a pouch of lesser spheres to an arrow and shooting it into the bridge’s underside for later retrieval. Concerns about weight, accuracy, and witnesses are raised, and Skar worries about betrayal; Kaladin rejects paranoia, insisting on mutual trust. Rock, refusing to fight but revealing quiet archery skill, makes the near-impossible shot, lodging the arrow and pouch in reach.
Kaladin promises not to force Rock to use the bow in battle and assigns Lopen to quietly procure rope through a cousin. With spheres hidden and weapons cached below, Bridge Four strengthens its covert support network while Kaladin refines plans to supply, train, and ultimately protect his men.
