Kaladin drifts in fevered delirium, his mind cycling through clinical diagnoses and memories while he lies near death. He hallucinates deathspren closing in and a tiny figure of pure light standing guard with a radiant sword, driving the spren away. Despite seeing the signs of imminent death, he clings to his resolve not to fail Bridge Four.

In the barrack, Teft and Skar keep constant watch, hiding Kaladin from curious soldiers and potential reprisals. Teft fears Sadeas or other lighteyes might quietly eliminate a man rumored to have survived the Stormfather’s judgment. Skar reports Kaladin’s worsening condition and leaves Teft to take over the vigil.

Haunted by his past with the Envisagers yet compelled by suspicion, Teft places three infused diamond spheres in Kaladin’s hand to test a dangerous hope. Kaladin suddenly inhales; Stormlight fades from the chips and wisps rise from his body, briefly knitting some wounds and reducing inflammation. The display confirms Teft’s belief: Kaladin can draw Stormlight and heal.

Shaken and awed, Teft retrieves the now-dun spheres and resolves to proceed cautiously. He plans to obtain small amounts of Light to feed Kaladin without drawing attention, keep the discovery secret, and protect him while Bridge Four continues to shield their leader.
