Kaladin leads Bridge Four under intense Parshendi fire, feeling a burst of strength as a focused volley slams into the bridge around him without striking flesh. They drop and shove the bridge into place alongside other crews while Sadeas’s archers and cavalry press the assault, the Parshendi briefly stunned that their volley missed.

As the cavalry charges, Dunny rises on the far side with arrows in him and collapses onto the bridge. Kaladin moves to help, but Moash drags him down and holds him as the cavalry thunder across, trampling Dunny. Shaken, Kaladin forces himself into soldierly calm, stands at the chasm’s lip with Bridge Four—Shen included—and resolves to address attrition rather than succumb to despair.

Kaladin then directs Bridge Four to aid the abandoned wounded from Bridge Eight. Despite protests over scarce supplies, he delivers a fierce appeal to honor, invoking his surgeon father’s example, and organizes triage: Teft manages tasks, Rock and others gather supplies and patients, Lopen and Dabbid fetch water and a litter, and Skar maintains pressure on wounds. Kaladin plans to lash multiple casualties atop their bridge and carry more in the water litter.

While treating arrow and head wounds—cauterizing when needed—Kaladin notes his spheres have been going dun quickly; Teft insists he keep them infused and quietly observes that arrows disproportionately miss Bridge Four. One patient dies, but several are stabilized. Kaladin wrestles with futility, yet continues the work, saving lives as he was taught.

After washing his hands, Kaladin discovers the cheek cut he felt earlier has vanished, unsettling him. Moash approaches about Dunny; Kaladin thanks him for saving his life. Moash admits he misjudged Kaladin, calls him an honest leader, and offers his hand. Bridge Four prepares the rescued wounded for transport back to camp.
