3. City of Bells
Overview
Shallan arrives in Kharbranth and confirms that Jasnah Kholin is still in the city. She travels to the Conclave, absorbing the diverse City of Bells while preparing to request wardship. The chapter reveals House Davar’s crushing debts and her father’s secret death, intensifying her urgency.
Summary
Shallan arrives at Kharbranth aboard Captain Tozbek’s ship after months pursuing Jasnah Kholin. Dock officials confirm Jasnah has not left, giving Shallan hope. Amid playful banter with Tozbek, she weighs her family’s precarious plan to secure an advantage in politics and finance.
Hiring a canopied handcart with Yalb as escort and translator, Shallan takes the direct route uphill. She observes Kharbranth’s cosmopolitan crowds, its color-coded districts, and the constant bells. The porter offers city lore and tries to inflate his fee; Yalb counters, and Shallan pays fairly, tipping Yalb generously to remain nearby.
At the Conclave, Shallan enters the grand, stone-hewn halls lit by Stormlight. A master-servant greets her in Veden and guides her toward Jasnah. While walking, Shallan reflects on her Calling in natural history, her longing for true scholarship, and Jasnah’s renown and controversial heresy, resolving to be proper as she petitions for wardship.
Deeper inside, Shallan confronts the stakes: House Davar is drowning in obligations; allies are scarce; and Highprince Valam can no longer protect them. Crucially, her father is dead—a fact that must remain secret. Determined to secure a path forward, Shallan steels herself and turns the corner to meet Jasnah.
