Chapter 51
Contains spoilersOverview
Alice brings Charlie home from the hospital to his pristine penthouse nine days after his surgery and has already stocked and decorated it to make it feel warmer. Charlie, grateful and vulnerable, asks Alice to stay the night because he does not want to be alone, but Alice declines to preserve boundaries and allow time for healing. They acknowledge that their relationship cannot return to how it was in the summer, and Alice promises to visit the next day.
Summary
On Thursday, October 9, nine days after Charlie’s open-heart surgery, Alice accompanies Charlie into his luxurious penthouse, noting its glossy, high-end design and impressive city views. In advance of his return, Alice had added personal touches: fresh flowers in several rooms, tiny white pumpkins on the dining table, and curated magazines and books. Charlie thanks her, visibly moved by the effort, and remarks on the well-stocked fridge.
Alice mentions that Nan would like to visit when Charlie is ready, and Charlie agrees. When Charlie asks what Alice thinks of his place, she teases that it looks like a high-end porn set before softening, saying it suits him. They share an easy moment of humor that causes Charlie some pain when he laughs.
Charlie observes that seeing Alice in his home feels strange and says she is “out of context.” Alice takes that as a cue to leave so he can rest, reminding him to call if needed. As she moves to kiss his cheek goodbye, Charlie turns, meets her eyes, and asks her to stay the night, offering the guest room and admitting he does not want to be alone.
Alice hesitates but declines, explaining that spending the night—even in separate rooms—does not feel right and that she cannot pretend nothing has changed between them. She also wants to give Charlie time to heal before discussing their relationship. Charlie, despairing, asks if things can ever be like the summer, and Alice gently confirms they cannot.
Alice heads for the door, promises to return after work the next day, and asks to be notified of any baby news, referencing Percy’s labor. Charlie agrees to text her, and Alice leaves, closing the door behind her.
