Alice hides in the boathouse after nearly hooking up with Charlie the previous night, wrestling with embarrassment and the choice to remain friends. The conversation shifts them from awkwardness to comfort and mutual care, ending with a warm embrace and a plan to swim.
Summary
On Saturday, July 12, Alice retreats to the boathouse to avoid Charlie after their near-intimate moment the night before. She attempts to sketch while watching Charlie stain the dock shirtless, replaying how intense their attraction felt before he stopped and said they should remain friends. She tells herself he was right, recalling a past friendship ruined by a crush.
Charlie climbs to the boathouse and teases Alice for hiding, then asks to talk. Alice tries to brush off the previous night and suggests pretending it never happened, but agrees to sit and listen. They sit on opposite twin beds in the dim light.
Unexpectedly, Charlie opens up about his mother, Sue, who had cancer and died three years earlier after harsh treatments. He admits he was not around as much as he should have been while Sam moved back home, and he carries guilt about that. He explains that when Nan asked for something to help her sleep, he got her an edible because it had helped Sue be more comfortable near the end.
Charlie briefly breaks down, and Alice moves to comfort him, first with touch and then by sitting beside him. She reassures him that he is too hard on himself and asks for his mother’s name, which he shares. They hug, and Charlie thanks Alice for listening and for being his friend, easing the tension between them.
The scene closes with Alice inviting Charlie for a swim and joking about his smell. They leave together toward the water, having reaffirmed their friendship and found a gentler intimacy through honesty and support.
