Summary
Alice, floating on a unicorn pool float, is approached by Charlie on a yellow Jet Ski. They banter while Nan watches from the deck. Charlie drops anchor, dives in, and tips Alice into the water, leading to a playful splash fight that shifts when he compliments her laugh. He invites her for a ride to show her safe routes on the lake so she will not damage John’s boat again.
Alice decides to go, thinking of her list. On the Jet Ski, she initially clings to Charlie before using the handgrips; she openly admires the light on his eyelashes, which momentarily disarms him. He recognizes she is different, then speeds off despite her request to go slow, checking in on her comfort as she relaxes and begins to enjoy the ride. He asks about her list and apologizes when she bristles at his teasing about its private entries, explaining teasing is how his family shows affection.
They circle the island as Charlie carefully points out hazards and the safest routes, revealing a serious, attentive side. When Alice indicates the cliff she intends to jump from (her list’s number one), Charlie offers to go with her and assures her he will keep her safe. After a brief exchange about fear, age, and the preciousness of time, Alice runs and jumps first, exhilarated, and Charlie follows. They jump two more times, the last in tandem, before continuing the tour.
Charlie shows Alice the big end of Kamaniskeg, pointing out where the wreck of the Mayflower can sometimes be seen and warning about dangerous whitecaps and the limits of John’s small boat. He pilots quickly through rougher water, then slows at a river mouth where they pass a rope swing and reach a waterfront restaurant called the Bent Anchor with a beach, patio, and a band setting up.
Charlie compliments Alice’s hair, comparing her to Venus, and observes she does not take compliments well. He says her unruly curls suit her unpredictability and calls her a “wild card.” A gust tangles her hair; when they both reach to move it, their fingers touch and the moment turns charged. Charlie pulls back, suggests the restaurant is good, and offers to have Harrison take her there. He asks if he can give Harrison her number, and she agrees, though without enthusiasm.
They return to Nan’s deck. Alice thanks Charlie for the ride and confirms he will come to her birthday party the next evening. Charlie responds with a dazzling grin, saying he would not miss it.
