Alice welcomes her sister Heather and niece Bennett to the lake on the day Charlie returns from Toronto. The group bonds on the water as Charlie warmly integrates with Alice’s family, taking them boating, to lunch, and to the bridge where he backflips into the river. Alice affirms her decision to pull her gallery piece and rediscovers passion for her own, more candid photography, capturing the day’s moments—while letting Charlie photograph her too.
Summary
On Saturday, August 9, Alice wakes early feeling hopeful and writes in her notebook about the summer so far, reflecting on her bucket list and how she has grown more confident. She thinks about missing Charlie during his two-day absence and anticipates Heather and Bennett’s arrival that afternoon.
Heather and Bennett arrive, and Alice notes Bennett’s self-consciousness and Heather’s worry about Bennett’s crush and secrecy. Alice admonishes Heather for reading Bennett’s diary and offers to talk to Bennett. The three lounge on inflatables while Nan watches from the deck, and Alice recalls her own adolescent insecurities at the lake.
Alice tells Heather and Bennett she has pulled her photo from the upcoming show and has been shooting looser, more personal work at the lake that she believes may be great. Heather celebrates Alice’s renewed passion. When Charlie appears across the bay, Heather teases Alice by calling him her boyfriend; amid the banter, Alice topples off her float into the water as Charlie arrives by boat.
Alice introduces Charlie to Heather and Bennett. Charlie invites them—and Nan—to go out on the lake. He carries Nan down the cottage stairs to the dock, an image Alice vows never to forget. They boat to the southern end of the lake and toward the river, with Nan moved to tears by the outing. Alice continually photographs moments of Nan and of Charlie’s interactions with the family, while Charlie often meets her gaze with a warm smile.
The group stops at the Bent Anchor for food and drinks. Alice documents Charlie helping Nan, the generous wine pours, shared plates, and candid conversations about Alice and Heather’s childhood. Heather eventually confiscates Alice’s camera so she will be present.
After lunch, Alice and Bennett sit on the dock with their feet in the water, and Charlie takes a picture of them, insisting Alice will want to remember the moment. He also takes an old-fashioned selfie with Alice, with both of them smiling at each other.
Back in the boat, Charlie suggests jumping from the nearby bridge. Alice hesitates, but Heather encourages it. Charlie anchors the boat, they swim to shore, and line up behind two teen girls who have never jumped. Charlie climbs onto a pillar and executes a backflip into the lake, impressing the onlookers. When it is Alice’s turn, she claims him with a playful, “Sorry, that one’s mine,” before preparing to jump.
