Overview

Alice goes on a first date with Harrison at the Bent Anchor. The evening is pleasant but lacks romantic spark, and both admit they are not clicking, with Harrison revealing he is not over his ex. When Harrison drops Alice off, they find Charlie’s car at the cottage, and Alice confronts Charlie upon entering.

Summary

On Friday, July 11, Alice dresses up in a green dress to meet Harrison for a date at the Bent Anchor. Harrison arrives casually dressed and reassures Alice she looks amazing. They sit by the river under a red umbrella with bluegrass music playing and order barbecue chicken and ribs.

Harrison talks about building houses with his family and shares that his true passion is pottery. He and Alice discuss glazing techniques, art, and photography. Alice notices his long fingers and, after two plastic glasses of white wine, relaxes despite being overdressed. When she gets cold, Harrison fetches a hoodie from his truck for her.

Despite the objectively good date, Alice keeps thinking about Charlie—comparing scents, wondering what it would be like to sit across from him—making it difficult to feel present with Harrison. After dinner, in the parking lot, both acknowledge the lack of chemistry. Harrison says it doesn’t feel right and admits he isn’t over his ex. Alice, thinking of her own breakup history, understands.

Harrison drives Alice back to the cottage. Seeing Charlie’s car in the driveway, Alice’s heart quickens. When she asks Harrison’s opinion of Charlie, Harrison says they have been friends since kindergarten and notes Charlie has become more serious recently compared to his former party-bringing self.

Alice declines to have Harrison come in, says good night, and enters the cottage. Seeing something that shocks her, she gasps and glares at Charlie, demanding, “What the hell is this?”
