Chapter 13
Contains spoilersOverview
Alice receives an email about Elyse’s gallery opening and deflects Nan’s interest in attending, preferring to avoid crowds. Early that morning, Harrison Singh, a friend of Charlie Florek, arrives with end tables and a bag of cucumbers Charlie sent, flirts with Alice, and invites her to the Tavern. Later, Alice and Nan shop at Stedmans for fabric and spend the rainy day preparing to sew curtains while Alice sets up an art space in the boathouse. That night, Alice and Charlie exchange teasing texts that underline mutual interest and Charlie’s role in encouraging Harrison.
Summary
On Sunday, June 29, Alice receives an email from Elyse with a draft invitation for the In (Her) Camera opening and asks Alice’s opinion. Nan expresses a desire to accompany Alice to the event, but Alice discourages it, saying the travel and the crowd would be too much for Nan and admitting she dislikes crowds and speeches.
A knock interrupts them: Harrison Singh, a friend of Charlie Florek, arrives unannounced at 8 a.m. with a grocery bag and two end tables in his truck. He explains Charlie was tied up and sent him to deliver the items. The bag contains English cucumbers that Charlie says Alice forgot at the store, which Alice recognizes as a joke. Harrison brings the tables inside, meets Nan, and declines coffee, saying he works with his father and grandfather building houses.
Outside, Harrison asks if Alice is staying all summer and whether she is dating Charlie. Alice says no. Harrison mentions the Tavern—once owned by Charlie and his brother Sam—and invites Alice to go there, clearly proposing a date but leaving it open as low pressure. Alice hesitates and says maybe, citing her responsibilities caring for Nan.
Later, on a rainy day, Alice and Nan visit Stedmans, a local general store, to choose fabric for curtains, discussing styles and colors with Joyce’s tastes in mind. They select a blue and cream Liberty-style print with touches of orange, yellow, and green for the kitchen and bathroom.
They spend the afternoon measuring and cutting fabric. While Nan naps, Alice sets up a makeshift art studio in the boathouse loft. After Nan wakes, she coaches Alice on sewing straight lines, approving her progress and planning to start the curtains the next day.
That night, Alice and Charlie text. Charlie says Harrison asked him to put in a good word, teases Alice about her red hair and “big mouth,” and references the cucumbers. The exchange is flirtatious and playful, ending with Alice saying goodnight and Charlie replying, “Sweet dreams, Alice,” signaling ongoing chemistry despite Harrison’s interest.
