Chapter 22
Contains spoilersOverview
Alice and Charlie take a break to swim on inflatable floats and have a frank conversation about past relationships and intimacy. Alice opens up about her breakup with Trevor and her tendency to show love through acts of service, while Charlie identifies his own love language as physical touch and admits he no longer believes long-term love is possible for him. The talk turns tender and vulnerable, but Charlie encourages Alice to date Harrison, prompting Alice to agree despite feeling stung. The chapter ends with Alice resolving to pursue that date as part of her bucket list.
Summary
Alice convinces Charlie to stop working and join her for a swim, and they float together on inflatables. Their teasing shifts into a deeper discussion of relationships. Alice explains that her four-year relationship with Trevor, which ended unexpectedly, had been calm and structured in ways that appealed to her after a chaotic upbringing. She shares how much effort she invested in appearing perfect and supporting Trevor, only to be hurt again when he got engaged two months after their breakup.
Charlie responds with empathy and blunt support, calling Trevor a loss, and introduces the idea of love languages. He says Alice expresses love through acts of service and likely wants others to notice and meet her needs without her asking. Alice recognizes this in herself. Charlie says his own love language is physical touch. Alice admits she cannot separate sex from caring and jokes about appreciating a spicy page in a novel.
Charlie reflects on his former dream of a traditional family life and says he has accepted that he is not built for long-term relationships. When Alice tentatively asks about his reaction to seeing Sam and Percy together, Charlie says their intimacy reminds him of his parents, which is sometimes painful and sometimes comforting.
Despite their growing closeness, Charlie suggests Alice should give Harrison a chance, noting that Harrison is also fresh out of a relationship and that they might get along. Alice is stung by Charlie trying to set her up with his friend, realizing she might be developing a crush on Charlie. To protect herself, she agrees brightly to go out with Harrison, framing it as pursuing her bucket list. Charlie seems surprised and looks away, and Alice steels herself to follow through.
