Maya reveals that she is pregnant. Rocky carefully restrains her impulse to comment, instead inviting Maya to share whatever she wants. Maya admits she doesn't know how she feels beyond physically sick, and that the pregnancy was unintended despite their precautions. Rocky relates briefly to her own pregnancy nausea, silently recalling that she was pregnant with Jamie at her wedding.

Maya estimates she is about seven or eight weeks along, having taken the test before leaving New York. She weighs her options aloud—having it or not—and notes she had an easy abortion decision in high school, but at twenty-four it feels less clear-cut. Rocky listens supportively, refraining from jokes or pressure.
